To convert milliliters to US fluid ounces, divide by 29.5735 (or multiply by 0.033814). So 100 mL is 3.38 fl oz, 500 mL is 16.91 fl oz and 1 liter is 33.81 fl oz. If your recipe or bottle is British, a UK fluid ounce is slightly smaller at 28.4131 mL, so the same 100 mL is 3.52 UK fl oz.
What is the formula for ml to oz? #
Both fluid ounces are defined from their gallons, and both gallons are defined in liters:
- US: 1 gallon = 3.785411784 L exactly (NIST SP 811). It holds 128 fl oz, so 1 US fl oz = 29.5735295625 mL.
- UK: 1 gallon = 4.54609 L exactly (Weights and Measures Act 1985). It holds 160 fl oz, so 1 UK fl oz = 28.4130625 mL.
The formulas:
- US fl oz = mL ÷ 29.5735
- UK fl oz = mL ÷ 28.4131
- mL = US fl oz × 29.5735
The mental shortcut #
Divide by 30. It’s quick, and the answer comes out about 1.4% low. For 500 mL, 500 ÷ 30 = 16.7 against the exact 16.9. For cooking and drinks that error doesn’t matter. For medicine, use the dosing cup or syringe that came with it, not a conversion.

In the US, 8 fl oz is one cup and 16 fl oz is one pint. In the UK, a pint is 20 UK fl oz (568 mL), which is why a British pint of beer is noticeably bigger than an American one even though each UK fluid ounce is smaller. More on that in US gallon vs imperial gallon.
Are fluid ounces and ounces the same thing? #
No, and this is where most ml-to-oz mistakes happen. A fluid ounce measures volume. An ounce (avoirdupois) measures weight: 28.35 g. A liquid measuring cup reads fluid ounces. A kitchen scale reads weight ounces.
They only line up for water, and only roughly. 100 mL of water is 3.38 fl oz by volume and weighs about 100 g, which is 3.53 oz by weight. For anything denser or lighter than water, such as honey, oil or flour, the two numbers drift apart. If a recipe gives “oz” for a dry ingredient, it means weight. What about nutrition labels? #
US nutrition labels use rounded metric values. FDA rules say that for labeling, “1 fl oz means 30 mL” (21 CFR 101.9). So a label’s serving size in mL can look slightly off from what the formula on this page gives. The label isn’t wrong. It’s following the labeling convention, not the exact definition.
Worked examples #
A baby bottle is marked 240 mL. 240 ÷ 29.5735 = 8.1 US fl oz, about one cup.
How many 5-ounce glasses are in a 750 mL bottle of wine? 750 mL is 25.36 fl oz, so about five glasses.
A perfume bottle says 50 mL. That’s 1.69 fl oz, which is why US packaging often prints “1.7 fl oz” next to it.
A recipe asks for 4 fl oz of stock. 4 × 29.5735 = 118.3 mL, or 1/2 cup.
A British recipe asks for 10 fl oz of milk. Those are UK fluid ounces: 10 × 28.4131 = 284 mL, a half pint. In US measures that’s 9.6 fl oz, or 1 cup plus 1 1/2 fl oz (3 tablespoons).
